In Memoriam

Alan Wright

Alan Wright: 1964 - 2004

One-time drummer for Miscellaneous "S". Was also very much into the local music scenes that he wrote of extensively in the Zines he published, such as Cryptic Times while in Kingston. in Kingston and later, Seattle, where he moved to with his wife. Other bands he worked with included The 14th Wray, Thee Upper Crust, The Primate 5, The Castros, The Infernal Three, The Reckless Bastards, and finally The Earaches. He took his own life in June 2004.

Bandmember Bryce McBride remembers:

I first got to know Alan due to his writing in "What Now". At the time, I was a programmer at CFRC, where I had a couple of shows, one featuring old time country and rockabilly, and the other featuring garage and punk stuff. Anyway, in his zine he railed against the lack of good programming on CFRC, but at the same time mentioned that my shows were interesting. I was intrigued and figured I should go and meet him, and invite him to join the station, in the sense that he should either work to improve things or shut up. So, I went to his apartment on Nelson St., and I think I kind of freaked him out, because it isn't every day that strangers come to your house and confront you about something you have written.

However, we got on quite well, and subsequently I wrote some stuff for his publications, and he played drums occasionally with the band I was then a part of, "Miscellaneous 'S'", and in fact became another member of the band, contributing songs like "Bingo Hall Queen" which were well suited to our novelty style. One of the coolest things we did was play a massive acid-head gathering north of Kingston in the summer of 1991. With him on drums we sounded so much better than usual!

Toby Steel

Toby Steel: 1960-2004

More than just a key founding member of the band, he was the musical heart in a band where musicality was something that many other members of the band only knew as a passing reference. He died of natural causes in August, 2004.
