Kingston, Ontario, December 28th, 1998:
The music world was shocked (and stunned) to hear that a stash of unreleased songs was discovered early this morning in the home of Miscellaneous 'S' keyboardist Pierre "Magic Fingers" Vanderhout. Dating from late 1991 and early 1992, the songs were apparently meant to be the foundation of the "next" Misc. 'S' album after the critically acclaimed concept album "New and Improved". However, the songs were never recorded due to the band's temporary demise and were apparently forgotten about until now.
The lost songs range from simple ideas ("Don't Laugh at Cro-Magnons", 'Hurricane Shlomo", "Lucy the Lacklustre Lyricist") to fully completed compositions with lyrics, chords and melodies ("Please Please Me", "Uncle Klement", "Ether Puffin", "Trojan Dilettante", "Goedoelloei Tension Music"). There are also several draft lyrics which have yet to be fully developed and set to music (including, among others, "Enjoyable Injuries", "Anything For You").
While they were all transcribed by Vanderhout, some of the ideas derived from interaction with other S members. In particular, a December 22, 1991 meeting with "Sinister" Pete Vamos in North York and a April 12, 1992 visit to the Ontario Science Centre with Keith "Captain Mondo" Roberts are specifically referenced by the newly discovered materials.
Of the completed tracks, music experts are particularly excited by "Trojan Dilettante", a sad tale (featuring a "bouzouki", according to the manuscript) of an ancient Greek with delusions of grandeur. Also in the historical vein is "Uncle Klement", which apparently summarizies the past 700 years of what is now the Czech Republic. "Ether Puffin" chronicles substance abuse among seabirds, while "Goedoelloei Tension Music" is a dramatic instrumental based on Vanderhout's 1991 stay in suburban Budapest. Despite the Beatlesque title, "Please Please Me" is a rather more desperate tale of a mortal's desire to be rescued from all sorts of imminent, messy, yucky, icky death.
Despite the presence of "ready-to-go" songs, it is perhaps more likely that the incomplete songs will eventually see the light of day on an actual "S" recording . Vanderhout is said to have a great video idea for "Prevent", a song fragment developed in concert with Vamos. While full details have yet to be disclosed, they are said to include a ferocious struggle to contain a wolverine in a fenced-in enclosure. Also intriguing is the fact that the 1992 expedition with Roberts was partially captured on videotape for an undetermined future use.
Miscellaneous "S" has just released its first greatest hits retrospective covering the years 1988-1991. Enough new material has been recorded for a new album (tentatively entitled "Vehiculos") and there are also plans for a second 1988-1991 compilation featuring the band's more adventurous material from that period. If they are recorded, the new songs would most likely surface commercially after the release of these two albums.
Finally, an unissued press release was also found in Vanderhout's home. The press release, dated October 2, 1991, speaks dimly of the band's future in light of band member relocations. Details of the press release will not be disclosed to the general public until members of the band have had an opportunity to review it.
